This shorthand is too impractical (unless we use sets and subsets) because no two things are the same enough to add.1 apple + 2 apples is 3 apples may be fine untill you get to the grocery store to pick out your apples (try to pick the 3 best ones out of hundreds)! They all vary in area, weight, color, etc. and to deal with these things requires the calculus, higher geometry, and algebra; not to mention molecular biology and psychology.
You may choose to argue this point but our present state of science is based as much on faith as is religion for most of us.......
